Dissemination of Knowledge on the Environment

At the cornerstone of the development policy of any Government, is the development and dissemination of knowledge. We adhere to the principles we have set up under our code of Ethical Conduct, and we play our part in disseminating knowledge amongst the neighboring community to develop in parallel. We take matters of Health & Safety as well as Corporate Citizenship earnestly; it is key to ensure the right message is carried through as wide an audience as possible.

In the Sustainability Report put forward by Dr.J.P.Mills, he cites the fundamental principles of understanding the river drainage basins (discussed below), natural occurrences of mineralization as well as the possible sources of Cyanide. To accompany this recurring theme, we have put together a basic fact box on the must discussed chemical. We must stress the importance of rightfully disseminating facts rather than rumor; fostering trust by education in the neighboring communities.

This is no publicity stunt. In a newspaper article dated 6th August 2007 by Thai Rat News Agency as well as a separate article dated 26th December 2007 by Khao Sot News, children unintentionally consumed cassava and suffered from fatal effects of cyanide poisoning in two separate but related cases in Si Sa Keat and Khon Kean. The interviewed Doctor, explained that Cassava contained some toxic chemical named “Cyanide”, and when consumed uncooked, could be very dangerous. Further, Kasetsart University mentioned that Cyanide is found naturally in Cassava, containing cyanogenis glucoside. When the level of Cyanide is tested by Acid dose method in plant and animal, it was found that in Cassava, there is a high level approximating 0.5-3.5 mg/kg, which is a danger to humans.

Cyanide can come as Sodium Cyanide. Below is a table examining the toxicity of both compounds.

Tree—Planting Project by Tungkum Limited

In honor of the 84th year of His Majesty the King Som Det Phataramaharaj, General Kittisak Rathprasert, Managing Director of Tungkum Limited (TKL) has begun a reforestation project at TKL (Wangsaphung, Loei Province).

The need for reforestation is great and TKL recognizes this importance. The positive impact trees make on the world is immense – from cleaning the air and helping to maintain a clean water supply to combating soil erosion and providing habitats for birds and other animals. The project will involve planting of 84,000 trees in the next four years until the year 2012. Currently, over 21,000 trees have already been planted in 2008.
